xTool

xTool S1

Enclosed Class 1 diode laser with a large bed and swappable laser modules. The safe all-rounder for a home workshop.

Strengths

  • Fully enclosed Class 1 design. No goggles needed while it runs
  • Large bed for batch jobs
  • Modules can be swapped as your needs change

Trade-offs

  • Diodes cut clear and blue acrylic poorly; CO2 handles that
  • Still needs ducting or a fume extractor to vent smoke

Open-frame diode lasers are cheap, but they spray reflected laser light around the room and need goggles every time. The S1 is enclosed to Class 1, so the lid, interlocks and flame detection do that job. That is the main reason to choose it for a home or shared workshop.

The bed is large for an enclosed diode machine, and AutoPassthrough lets longer boards feed through. Modules swap, so you can start with a lower-power diode and add an infrared module later for metal and plastic marking.

Know the limits: diode light passes through clear and blue acrylic, so those cut badly. If acrylic is your main material, look at the xTool P2S CO2 laser instead.
